slept是sleep的过去式， 指“睡觉”。through 指“从开始到结束”、 “到最后”。whole指“全部的”、 “全体
的”。这里的play指“戏剧”。

pearl “珍珠”。swine “猪”。习惯用语， 相当于“对牛弹琴”。引自《圣经》里的话。

He isn’t able to appreciate it.
（他欣赏不了。）

appreciate “欣赏”。

He doesn’t know enough about it to appreciate it.

enough “足够的”。

各种评价方式

你工作从来没有停下来过。

You never stop working.
（你工作从来没有停下来过。）

That’s because I like to make money.
（那是因为我喜欢赚钱。）

stop ...ing “停止……”。stop to ... “停下来去做……”。

make money “赚钱”、 “挣钱”。

You’re always working.
You’re a workaholic.
（你是一个工作狂。）

workaholic “工作狂”。

You’re an eager beaver.
（你是一个工作勤奋的人。）

eager beaver “工作勤奋的人”。褒义词。

You’re a real go-getter.
（你是一个能干的人。）

go-getter “能手”。褒义词。

他为什么那么努力工作？

He works seven days a week.
（他每周工作7天。）

Why does he work so hard?
（他为什么那么努力工作？）

Why doesn’t he take any time off?
（他为什么不休息？）

这里的take off 指“休息”。

What makes him work so hard?
他太拼命了。

He pushes himself too much.
（他太拼命了。）

Tell him he needs to take it easy.
（告诉他要悠着点干。）

push oneself “努力”、 “逼迫自己”。

take it easy “放松”、 “悠闲地干”。

He works way too hard.
He shouldn’t push himself so hard.
他更喜欢独自工作。

Should we help Mr. Jones?
（我们要帮琼斯先生吗？）

No. He prefers working alone.
（不要。他更喜欢独自工作。）

prefer ...ing “喜欢……”。alone “单独地”。

He likes to work alone.
He isn’t a team player.
（他没有团队精神。）

他的想法和别人都不一样。

He’s a very strange fellow.
（他是一个非常怪的人。）

He doesn’t think like everyone else.
（他的想法和别人都不一样。）

He thinks independently of most people.

independently “独立地”、 “和其他无关地”。

He thinks differently than everybody else.
（他想的和别人不一样。）
