in their own right “凭自己的能力”。直译是“他们凭自己的能力成了名”。

tell “分清”、 “识别”。

这里的spot指“马上分清”。tourist 指“游客”。easily 指“容易地”。
give away “暴露”。

immediately “立刻”。
I can tell American tourists easily.
这里的tell指“分清”。
我和老板不是亲戚。
I’m not related to my boss.
（我和老板不是亲戚。）
I thought he was your uncle.
（我还以为他是你叔叔。）
be related to ... “和……是亲戚”。
uncle “叔叔”。
My boss and I are not related.
I am not a relative of the boss.
relative “亲戚”。

He worked here two years ago. Doesn’t his name ring a bell?

ring a bell “引起模糊回忆”。

stir “唤醒”、 “唤起”。
他的名字我听说过， 但是我想不起来是谁。

这里的familiar指“听说过”。place 是“想起”的意思。

forgot是forget的过去式， 表示“忘记”、 “不记得”。
