  Part One Checking Out

  (G = Guest, C = Clerk)

G: Good morning. Is this where I can pay my hotel bill?

C: Yes. Please tell me your room number and when you are checking out.

G: My room number is 1012 and I'd like to check out right now.

C: Just a moment, please (checks files)。 Are you Mr Steward from America?

  G: Yes, Richard Steward.

C: Mr Steward, did you sign any bills in the last two hours in our hotel?

  G: No.

C: Have you used any hotel services this morning?

G: Ah, I used the mini-bar, drank a tin of coca-cola and made a long distance call in my room.

C: I'm afraid your final bill hasn't reached here yet. One moment, please. I'll call the department concerned. (He makes a call and then adds the amount to the bill.) Sorry to have kept you waiting, sir. Here is your hotel bill. Please check it.

G: I'm sorry. What's this for? (Pointing to a figure)

C: That's for the drinks and phone calls you made from your room.

G: I see. Thank you. Can I pay with traveler's checks?

C: Certainly, sir. (He fills out checks and hands them and his passport to the cashier.) Here are your bill and receipt, Mr Steward. Hope you enjoyed your stay with us here and have a pleasant trip home.

  G: Thank you.

  Part Two A Miscalculation

  (G = Guest, C = Clerk)

C: Good morning, madam. What can I do for you?

G: Just now I checked out here. I found out that there might be something wrong with the bill.

C: I'm sorry to hear that.

G: I checked in on May 5th and will be leaving this morning.

It's the 10th today. That's exactly 5 days, I think. But I paid for six days.

C: Well, let me see. The 5th, 6th, the 7th …… Ah, yes, you checked out in the morning, so you only stayed here for 5 days, no more. I'm awfully sorry, madam. There is a mistake on the bill. I do apologize for my mis-checking. I'll correct it for you. Here you are. Would you please check it again?

  G: That's all right.

C: Now let me give you another receipt and please check it. Here is the money you overpaid.

  G: Thank you!

C: Thank you for your understanding, madam. I'm awfully sorry to have caused you so much trouble. I promise such things won't happen again. Good-bye.

  Part Three Foreign Currency Exchange

  (G = Guest, C = Clerk)

C: Good morning, sir. Can I help you?

G: I'd like to change some money.

C: What kind of foreign currency have you got, sir?

G: U.S. dollars. What's the exchange rate today?

C: According to today's exchange rate, every US dollar in cash is equivalent to 8.25 yuan. How much would you like to change, sir?

G: Well, I'll like to change one hundred and here's the money.

C: Now, would you please fill in this form?

  G: A11 right.

C: Please write your name, passport number and room number on the slip.

  G: Here you are.

C: Thank you. You'll have it right away. Will you sign your name here on the exchange memo?

G: OK. Will you please give me some one-yuan coins? I need some small change.

C: A11 right. Here are five 100 yuan bills, four 50 yuan bills and ten 10 yuan bills and here are twenty-five one yuan bill. That makes 825 yuan in all. Please check it and keep the exchange memo.

G: 0h, yes, thanks. By the way, can you tell me what I should do with the RMB left with me?

C: You will have to go to the Bank of China or the Airport Exchange Office to change it back into dollars. There you will be asked to show the memo.
