Part One Booking Air Tickets
(G = Mr Graham, C = Clerk)
G: Good afternoon. Could you do me a favor?
C: It's a pleasure, Mr Graham. What is it?
G: I'm leaving for Shanghai the day after tomorrow.
C: That's August 8, isn't it?
G: That's right.
C: Are you going there by train or by plane?
G: By plane, of course. Planes are much faster than trains.
How many flights are there to Shanghai every day?
C: There are four flights every day. The planes take off at about 7:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 4:00p.m. and 10:OOp.m. respectively.
G: I'll take 10:00 a.m. plane, then. That suits me perfectly. Will you kindly book two tickets for me?
C: Certainly, Mr Graham. Would you please fill in this form?
G: A11 right. Shall I pay cash now?
C: Yes, please pay 800 yuan in advance.
G: Here you are. By the way, when can I get the tickets?
C: You can get them on the evening of August 7.
G: That'll be fine. Thank you very much.
C: Don't mention it.
Part Two Sending a Fax
(R = Receptionist, G = Guest)
R: Good morning, sir. Can I be of any assistance to you?
G: Yes. I want to send a fax, but I don't know where I can send it out.
R: That's easy, sir. The fax machine is in our business center. It's on the second floor.
G: Thank you very much. By the way, can you tell me how it is charged?
R: I'm sorry I don't know the exact price. But anyway the clerks there can tell.
G: Thanks again. Good-bye.
R: You're most welcome. Good-bye.
Part Three Sending E-mails
(G = Guest, C = Clerk)
C: Good morning, Mr Richards. Can I help you?
G: Yes. I wonder if you could provide internet service. I have to reply an E-mail to my wife.
C: Yes. There is an access to Internet in every guest room. The access is just under the writing desk.
G: But I forgot to bring my portable computer with me.
C: Well, you can get on the internet here. The price for half an hour of connection is 20 yuan.
G: That's good. May I come on in?
C: Come on in, please.
(A few minutes later.)
G: Your computer is convenient to manipulate. I've done everything I wanted.
C: I'm glad to hear that. For 28 minutes, we charge you 20 yuan. We charge it on half an hour basis.
G: I see. I'd like to pay in cash. Here is 50 yuan.
C: Thank you. Here is your change and the receipt, Mr Richards.
G: Thank you. Goodbye.
C: Good night, Mr Richards.
Part Four Explaining Time Differences
(Scene: Mr White is asking the receptionist something about time difference at the Front Desk)。
W: Can you help me?
R: I'm very glad to.
W: I've just come from London and I'm not at all used to the time difference here. I like to get up earlier and I'm fond of morning exercises.
R: I see. Time is the same through the whole of China. Chinese time is 8 hours ahead of London time. When it is 12 noon in Beijing, the standard time in London is 4:00 a.m. of the same day.
W: Thank you for the information. Without your help, I'd have no idea what the time is.
R: It's my pleasure to give you help. It's 2 o'clock in the afternoon now. You'd better have a good rest, Mr White.
W: That's very considerate of you. But would you please wake me up at 7:00 Beijing time tomorrow morning?
R: Sure, Mr White.
Part Five Asking for An Interpreter
C: Good morning, sir. Can I help you?
G: Yes, I'd like to get some information on the prices for renting personnel and equipment for our convention.
C: Certainly, sir. Here is the price list.
G: Well, we shall need an interpreter for a week, an overhead projector for 5 days, a slide projector for 4 days.
C: The interpreter is 200 yuan a day, so that makes 1400 yuan. The overhead projector is 35 yuan a day, that makes 175 yuan, the slide projector is 30 yuan a day, so that makes a total of 1695 yuan, sir.
G: How much is that in dollars?
C: Approximately 200 dollars, sir.
G: That's sounds reasonable. Say, do you have closed circuit TV? How much does that work out at?
C: We have some brand new equipment which costs around 15 dollars an hour.
G: A11 right. Sign me up for the personnel and the equipment and thanks for the suggestion.
C: My pleasure. Glad to be of assistance.
