  Part One At the Barber's

  (Hairdresser = H, Mr Graham = G)

H: Good morning, sir. Welcome to the beauty salon.

G: Thank you. I'd like to have a trim and a shave. I also want my hair dyed where I'm going gray.

H: Excuse me for saying so, but at your age, you look so much more dignified and manly with silvery gray hair. It would be a pity to have it dyed.

G: Is that so? I never thought about that myself, but people tell me I look terribly old.

H: 0h, that's just the idle talk of the young. Seriously, with all those fancy hairstyles, most young kids look very silly and immature.

G: Well, you know best. What would you suggest then?

H: To leave it as it is. I'll have to cut the back just to shape it. Also, I'd advise you to keep the beard.

G: No, I think I'll shave it off. I feel so untidy with it.

H: Not if I shape it. You see, the beard fits your face just perfectly.

G: Thank you. But I still think I'll get rid of it. You don't know what trouble it is to take care of it.

H: 0f course, whatever you say, sir. A clean chin is a nice feeling. All right, there you are. Would you lie back so that I can shave you, sir?

G: Be careful with the razor, please.

H: 0kay. How do you like it?

G: Fine, you've done a good job. I'm very pleased.

H: Is there anything else you want, sir? A manicure?

G: No, thank you, not today. How much is it altogether?

H: That'll be ten yuan. Thank you.

  Part Two A Cold Wave

  (Beautician = B, Mrs Graham = G)

B: Good afternoon, madam. Welcome to our parlor.

G: Good afternoon. I'm Mrs Graham. I have an appointment for a cold wave.

B: 0h yes, Mrs Graham. Could you sit here, please? What style would you like, Mrs Graham?

G: I'd like it done in one of the latest styles. Could you show me some pictures of hair styles?

B: Certainly, Mrs Graham. Here are some of the latest styles in fashion now: mini style, hair sweptback, chaplet, shoulder-length, noble style, horse-tail style, etc…… Would you care to try one of them?

G: Thank you. I like the style in this picture, but trim a little on the sides.

B: May I make a suggestion? You see, the style you chose does not really suit you. Would you care to try another one? (He shows her another picture.)

G: I really don't know. I don't really pay all that much attention to my hair.

B: 0h, it is not just fashion, Mrs Graham. It is a matter of expressing yourself. Your personality shines through the right hairstyle.

G: Really? Well, I can't decide what kind of hairstyle suits me.

B: That, you can leave to us, the professionals, Mrs Graham, I can pick the best for you. Would you like a sophisticated style or would you rather have it fall naturally?

  G: Fall naturally, I guess.

B: Very well. Now let me explain what I'll do. I'll cut your hair to the middle of your back, have it curled inside at the ends. And then, I'll part it in the middle and make it wavy at the sides.

G: My hair is naturally curly, don't forget.

B: Of course, as you are a regular customer, we know the quality of your hair.

G: Sounds fine. But how long will it take? I have to meet my husband for lunch at one o'clock.

B: You have more than enough time. Will you please step over here? First of all, Jack will give you a shampoo. I want to cut your hair wet.

  …

  B: Please have a look.

G: 0h, it's beautifully done. Could you trim my eyebrows and darken them?

B: Certainly. Would you like a manicure?

G: Yes. Use a pink nail varnish, please.

  Reading Material

In some countries, long hair has been in vogue for more than ten years now. The problem of distinguishing a man from a woman by hairstyle has become too familiar to be taken seriously. Among other things, people have learnt that hairstyles are a deceptive indicator of sex. A person's way of walking, the body shape and the clothing are more reliable in this respect. Worth mentioning is that very long hair for men is losing its popularity.

Indeed, if one pays close attention to hairstyles, one will discover men and women nowadays wear more or less identical hairstyles. This is not to say, of course, that the difference between a barber and a hairdresser no longer exists, but it does mean that similar services can be found in both establishments. Nowadays a man does not go to a barber only for a haircut, he might want a permanent wave, which makes his hair as wavy as any fair lady's. Even shaving, so masculine and regarded only as necessary for men, takes another form when it appears in a ladies' beauty-parlor. Although a delicate process is involved that is not easily comprehensible, electrolysis is just as efficient as any razor blade and shaving cream in removing women's facial hair.

There are people who still prefer the conventional hairstyles and women do look more natural with feminine styles. To pursue this end, hair stylists have invented more equipment than one can name. Hairclippers, and curlers appear very primitive in the company of recent innovations, which make use of new discoveries in other fields of knowledge such as biochemistry, electronics and psychology. For the first category, hairsprays, conditioners and hair-restorer are the products of the joint-efforts of fashion and chemistry. Convenient sets of prongs, dryers and blowers would not have come into being without knowledge of modern physics. As for psychology, it seems that it is used widely by hairdressers to convince their customers that “original” is another word for “bad-looking”。

Men's hairstyles remain simpler by comparison, despite the efforts of stylists to compete with the women's in complexity. Perhaps, there is really a natural lack of concern over appearance in some men. Although a barber's now provides different kinds of services, a trip to a barber's still means a haircut, a shampoo and a shave to most men. Nevertheless, even simple operations like these work wonders for one's appearance. They can turn a dishevelled beggar into a successful businessman. Freshness, brightness and optimism are all conveyed by a proper hairstyle.
